For the most part, we all know how to choose software. We know what we want, we know what the competitors use, and most of it is just an updated version of an older package anyway. But, when it comes to backup software, technology has changed a lot in the past few years. Before, backup software was expensive and difficult to use, but not anymore.
There are a couple of particular features that you should be looking for when you are trying to find the right backup package for your business. The first one should be that it is easy enough for you (or whoever is responsible for the backup) to use. If it is too difficult, it won't be used at all, and that is a recipe for disaster.
You also want to choose a package that allows you to do incremental backups. This means that only the items that have changed since the last backup will be recorded. This makes for a much simpler and quicker backup, and also ensures that you aren't backing up good data with bad data.
The backup software that you choose should also be able to be fully scheduled. In other words, you don't want to have to be there when it is backing up. All you really need to do is determine the amount of data that you are comfortable losing (one day, one week, one month?) and backup that often. Set the scheduler so that it does it automatically, and you will never have to worry again.
Finding the right backup package is absolutely vital right now, with so many viruses and so much spam on computers. By opening just one wrong attachment, a single user can bring down your entire system, so make sure that you are properly backed up.
